Redesigned Packaging with Masculine Appeal

Eunice Young Tak's innovative approach to men's skincare packaging

L'Oreal, a renowned brand in the beauty industry, recognized the need to revamp its men's skincare packaging to better cater to its target audience. Enter Eunice Young Tak, a talented designer who took on the challenge of creating a packaging series that exudes masculinity and sophistication. Inspired by elements from the world of watches and sports cars, Tak successfully transformed the brand's image and created a unique and captivating design.

The standout feature of the redesigned packaging is the caps, which resemble watch dials. This clever design choice not only adds a touch of elegance but also invites men to take a moment to rewind the clock and refresh their skin. The rubber matte cap adds a functional and efficient element, perfect for the on-the-go professional. On the other hand, the sleek glossy material used for the bottom of the packaging evokes the sleekness and allure of a sports car.

To further enhance the masculine appeal, the entire product is wrapped in a dark gray primary tone, which better embodies the essence of masculinity. Tak also incorporated orange accents on certain areas and typography, aligning with the hierarchy of read and preserving L'Oreal's brand equity.

The redesign project took a total of 14 weeks, from research to development, to finalize. Throughout the process, Tak and her team, including Young Joo Tak, Lawrence Yang, and Jung Yoon Shin, faced various challenges. The previous packaging lacked a clear brand identity and failed to resonate with the target market. However, through their creative vision and meticulous attention to detail, they successfully transformed the packaging into a bold and assertive representation of masculinity.

The success of the redesigned packaging did not go unnoticed. In 2012, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The redesigned L'Oreal Men's Expert Skincare Series stood out for its strong technical characteristics and its ability to evoke positive emotions and wonder.
